Description

Dateline was the first to successfully investigate the secret world of crime families known as Irish Travelers. Travelers are a closed society of Irish immigrant descendants, who practice old world ways of living in the new world. Police say they make a living by making crime pay: operating home improvement scams, running imposter burglaries, shoplifting, committing insurance fraud, counterfeiting money and evading taxes. They use numerous aliases, false social security numbers and doctored birth certificates to confuse law enforcement. Their culture is tangled: inter-family marriages, child brides, high-dollar arranged marriages and a secret, unwritten language. In two segments, Dateline explores this bizarre world within a world.
