The Los Angeles Times discovered that federal and state assault weapon bans -- enacted with overwhelming public support -- have done almost nothing to staunch the proliferation of these highly lethal guns. Seizing upon gaping loopholes in the statutes, arms manufacturers have continued to flood the market with assault weapons by making slight cosmetic changes, leaving the firepower intact. What's more, the law enforcement community has seemed unable -- and sometimes unwilling -- to crackdown.
