Description

Jesus Chavez, a super featherweight boxer, was arrested for robbing a grocery store in Chicago in 1990, while still a teenager. He did time, was deported and reentered the U.S. illegally, settling in Austin in 1994. He stayed straight, stayed in shape and joined the ranks of professional boxing. In 1995 he was caught by immigration authorities, and because of that armed robbery, federal law defines him as an aggravated felon who must be deported. Texas Monthly chronicles his fight to stay in the U.S.
