Reporters spent a year and a half sifting through a mountain of evidence and independently gathered material to tell the story of a big corruption case. The series traced the evolution of a massive racketeering and extortion case against former Gov. Edward D. DiPrete and also examined prosecutorial misconduct that weakened the case. The newspaper's findings revealed systemic flaws in Rhode Island government, politics and its criminal -justice system.
