This report investigates many companies in North Carolina that have polluted surrounding areas. The News & Observer explained that the Department of Environment and Natural Resources has the ability to fine these businesses, but the state regulators have avoided using the full force of the law. For example, the Steelcase furniture plant was fined $1.02 million dollars for illegally pumping nearly 80 tons of toxic solvents into the air. The company paid $102,000.
