Star reporters uncovered numerous towns in Missouri that are exposed to these harmful gasoline leakages. With the enactment of new laws, " The Star examined years of compliance and inspection data maintained by Missouri and Kansas and interviewed dozens of government and industry officials, service station owners and other experts in the nation." Reporters found new equipment failing, new technological upgraded tanks failing and a lack of inspectors to check for regular compliances.
