Description

Village Voice examines how "the trappings of romance are becoming grounds for arrest." The story reports on the slow progress of a new anti-stalking statute passed by the state of New York in 1999, which was supposed to protect victims of "romantic" stalking after breakups. The article exemplifies the long-term dangers of this type of stalking with the case of Russian emigre who persistently followed his English teacher and asked her to marry him on the subway. Several other court cases in recent years have also been used to illustrate how stalking can presage serious violence.
