Governing reports on the increasing role and importance of state performance auditors, who are more than just bean counters. Performance auditors "delve into organizational design and function on a wide front to judge whether an operation is 'efficient and effective.'" Though they sometimes get caught in political battles, auditors are expected to play an increasing role in keeping an eye on local and state governments.
