Description

Reason examines some absurd affirmative action requirements imposed on private companies that work on government contracts. The first-person story, written by the director of a small private contractor in New York, reveals that companies have to comply with many contradictory clauses. One of the implications is that sometimes, to keep with the suggested percentage of minority and female workers, a company may have to fire workers to maintain the desired balance. The author finds that "good companies run away" from government business, and in result taxpayers "foot the bill: in increased costs, in substandard work, and in the payroll of the genetically approved bureaucrats who scrutinize the reports."
