Description

Reporter Sean Harder spends 48 hours as a homeless person in the middle of December and writes a narrative of what he experiences on the street and in Battle Creek, Michigan's only shelter. The city has an unusually high number of homeless persons for a city of its size and local studies show that on any given night 200 to 250 people are sleeping on the street, in cars, or at the shelter. "The high number of homeless persons is due in part to a county jail that builds revenue by boarding inmates from police agencies outside the community, as well as the presence of a regional Veterans Administration hospital."
