Massing spent about two and a half weeks in Afghanistan interviewing everyone from provincial governors to aid workers, people on the street and U.S. troops. He found good security in Kabul but discontent brewing throughout the countryside. Locals expressed fear at the rise of Northern Alliance officials to positions of power in the fledgling state.
