Description

In the course of their investigation, the reporters at the Tennessean discovered that out of 229 police pursuits in 2003: 67% violated some police pursuit policy, 37% involved damage, and 10% involved injury. In once instance, the suspect involved in the pursuit hit another car and was killed after the police observed him taking part in a drug transaction. Though the other driver was not seriously hurt, the police department decided to place more restrictions on pursuits in order to increase public safety. What the Tennessean found, however, was that officers in pursuit often violated these restrictions in order to get their suspect.
