These stories examined how well the nation's leading clinical research organizations followed the federal law that requires them to report publicly the results of completed clinical trials - experiments involving human subjects. We found that Stanford University, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and other prestigious medical research institutions flagrantly violated the law, depriving patients and doctors of complete data to gauge the safety and benefits of treatments. Nearly all other institutions - including pharmaceutical companies - flouted the requirements routinely. The failure to report has left gaping holes in the federal ClinicalTrials.gov database used by millions of patients, their relatives, and medical professionals, often to compare the effectiveness and side effects of treatments for deadly diseases.
