Description

The Sun (Baltimore) investigates the case histories of eight commutation cases approved by Maryland's governor in which state officials contended that women jailed for murdering their spouses were victims of battered spouse syndrome and therefore less culpable for their crimes; finds that five of the eight were indeed predicated on a history of domestic violence, but the other three were less obvious and found that the state relied heavily on the word of the women themselves, 1991.
