Millions of Texas residents were left out without access to electricity when the state’s electric grid operation lost control of the power supply during a massive winter storm. As the blackouts extended from hours to days amid freezing weather and impassable roads, The Texas Tribune’s breaking news reporting brought the accountability Texans needed about why they were suffering. The Tribune’s reporting struck down misinformation about wind turbines being the primary culprit for the outages and contextualized about concerns about storm preparedness were raised well before the 2021 storm.
