Summary The State of Illinois is using geriatric nursing homes as dumping grounds for thousands of able-bodied mentally ill citizens as young as 20 years old, some with histories of uncontrollable violence. The Tribune's investigation found that state officials have manipulated patient files to hide the number of mentally ill patients in nursing homes in order to collect an extra $50 million in Medicaid.
