Educator of Color Fellowship

Provides assistance to attend a Data Bootcamp for Educators. The 2023 bootcamps will take place on: July 10-14 (University of Missouri); July 24-28 (virtual). 

Description

Funded by the Lumina Foundation and Syracuse University to provide data training for college journalism educators to receive hands-on training as well as assistance with syllabus creation and teaching skills.

Who is eligible?

Educators of color teaching, or interested in teaching, data journalism within one’s curriculum. Or if you're an educator at a Minority Serving Institution (MSI) of any racial or ethnic background. No data journalism experience or data teaching experience is necessary.

What does the fellowship provide?

  • One-year IRE membership/renewal ($70 value)
  • Complimentary boot camp registration ($800 value)
  • Travel Stipend ($500) in-person bootcamp

Required application materials:

  • Link to CV
  • Letter of support from supervisor/appropriate person to attend the training. Letter should include why you are deserving of a scholarship to receive this training and that journalism program is committed to teaching data journalism. 
  • Include in CV or in application: List of data journalism and investigative reporting courses taught in the past and list of continuing education/professional development training received.
  • Description of how the educator will put the training to use for students.
