Web scraping: Sessions, tools and a discount

Ever wanted to scrape data from the web but didn't know how? Here's your chance to learn. We're offering two sessions on web scraping at the IRE Conference in San Francisco, June 26-29.

In addition to that, Helium Scraper has given us some coupon codes for a limited number of IRE members to receive 50 percent off the PC software cost of $99. Helium Scraper provides a point-and-click interface for grabbing valuable data locked in web pages.

Anyone interested in the coupon should email Jaimi Dowdell, IRE’s senior training director, at jaimi@ire.org. Coupons are first come, first served.

When to scrape: Tools and techniques

Thursday, June 26 from 9-10 a.m.

This demo of web scraping will be taught by Steven Rich of The Washington Post and Aaron Williams of The Center for Investigative Reporting.

 

Web scraping for any reporter

Friday, June 27 from 8:50-9:50 a.m.

In this hands-on class, NICAR Data Library Director Liz Lucas will teach you how to scrape data from websites without having to write any code using Helium Scraper. Attendees of this hands-on class will receive coupon codes.
