DocumentCloud joins IRE

Investigative Reporters and Editors is proud to announce that DocumentCloud is becoming part of our organization.

DocumentCloud, funded through a grant from the Knight News Challenge, provides a set of tools and technologies designed to help journalists analyze and share source documents, and make it simple to publish those documents to the Web. Launched less than a year ago, the service, which allows news organizations to upload documents and make them public, is used by more than 250 news organizations and is home to more than 80,000 documents.

IRE is providing a home for DocumentCloud and ensuring that news organizations can continue using its services, even as those services continue to evolve and expand.

"We are in favor of mergers in the public interest and wish there were more of them," said Eric Newton, Senior Adviser to the President at Knight Foundation. "Knight supported the Huffington Post Investigative Fund joining the Center for Public Integrity. This is a win-win. IRE, its members and other journalists get the latest tools and Document Cloud gets a permanent partner to sustain it during its growth phase. Mergers that put the public interest first are relatively rare in the nonprofit world. This is a great example of why they should be more seriously considered."

Mark Horvit, IRE's executive director, said DocumentCloud's mission "fits perfectly with IRE. DocumentCloud helps journalists analyze documents to produce investigative and watchdog journalism, and then makes it much easier to present those documents to the public in a way that provides context and meaning."
