Over the course of four sessions, attendees will learn various tools and strategies for dealing with “dirty data”: messy values, typos, incorrect data types, bad formatting and unstructured data. The trainers will focus on free tools and techniques that require little to no coding, starting with functions and features in Google Sheets. Attendees will also get an introduction to the basics of some command line utilities; OpenRefine, which has powerful clustering algorithms for tackling messy values; and regular expressions, an incredibly powerful cleaning tool for unstructured data. The workshop uses real-world data examples and covers best practices and strategies for cleaning data. This bootcamp will take place 12 p.m. - 3 p.m. ET on the following days: April 16, April 18, April 23 and April 25.

Despite the immense impact bad research can have on public health and safety — and even though the U.S. government spends billions of dollars a year on research projects — few journalists monitor and report on research fraud and errors.
